SKW win Girls Soccer League - Submitted by editor on Wed, 10/26/2011
Despite losing their last match of the season 1-0 against St. George’s on Tuesday afternoon, Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) were crowned as the champions of the first edition of the Telecom Girls League Soccer (GLS).
For the Olympia based outfit it was the first and only defeat in an impressive campaign, which saw them collect 29 points from twelve games. Hage Geingob School from Katutura also had a great season and came second four points behind the log leaders and one point clear of third placed St Georges.
Before the SKW girls were handed over their trophy and medals donated by main sponsor Telecom, the final matches of the season took place on their home ground in Olympia.
In an interesting clash of two top teams, St. George’s managed to gain the lead after nineteen minutes when striker Hilya Intamba scored after a corner from Abrille Beukes. SKW fought hard for the equaliser, but failed to overcome St. George’s outstanding goalkeeper Jessica de Oliveira.
“We had more ball possession and dominated for most of the game, which was arguably the best of the whole season, but we just couldn’t score”, said SKW coach Martin Brosda. With his team’s overall performance during the season, however, Brosda was very happy.
“We have been the best and most consistent team and deserved to win the title.” In July, Brosda, who is also the youth coordinator of SKW, founded the Telecom GLS. During the prize-giving ceremony he applauded all participants for a great inaugural season. “All the teams have improved tremendously over the past few months.”
In the first match on Tuesday, Hage Geingob beat fifth placed Emma Hoogenhout 2-1 to claim their eighth win of the season. Amalia Ilonga and Karolina Frans scored for the Katutura based school, while Lena !Noreses’ second half goal for Emma came too late.
In a very one-sided encounter, St. Paul’s outplayed Windhoek International School and cruised to an easy 7-0 victory. Nashi Ya Toivo scored four goals, while Dorian van Rooi added three more. St. Paul’s finished fourth in the final ranking on 18 points.
The Delta Secondary School didn’t pitch for the second round matches due to the approaching exam period. With all the points of the six games given to their opponents, they found themselves at the bottom of the log with only three points, - a further three points behind Windhoek International School.
All seven teams received a match ball and the coaches were given a small gift for their efforts, while every single player got a shoulder bag and cap. All the prizes were sponsored by Telecom, which had also provided a cash sponsorship worth N$10 000.
Meanwhile, the telecommunication company has announced that it is eager to sponsor the successful Telecom GLS for another season
